Love the iLiad from iRex

The iRex iLiad is a fantastic reader. I bought it over the Kindle and other readers for three reasons. It has a larger screen, can create folders and can take notes with a stylus. Yes, there is more functionality available if you have Linux experience but you don't need that experience to achieve the same amount of capability as the other readers with maybe one exception. Kindle allows browsing out of the box. The iLiad requires installation of the Developers package first. Of course Kindle also has the Sprint wireless connection.
Regarding a criticism from a previous post about the CF card. You connect the reader to your PC and the card will appear as a drive. You do have to go into the setup to tell the iLiad that the card will be the drive rather than memory. You also can identify which type of items are kept on the card. The overall structure is broken out by Newspaper, Books, Documents and Notes. Think of this breakout as folders off the root directory. In these locations you can create other folders.
With everything said the iLiad may not be for the faint of heart but this might also be said of the other readers. I think it may take one or two more upgrades before readers are really ready for primetime. Buy the Kindle if the items I first mentioned are not of a concern to you.
This reader can read Mobipocket, HTML, TXT and PDF files. It cannot read epub or digitally signed PDF files. It did take me time to figure out how to create a table of contents in the PDF files I created with links to the pages. I bought Nitro PDF to convert MS Word to PDF.
In summary the screen display is crisp and perfect. It truly does look like print. It takes a bit of time to boot up and like all readers there is a slight delay with page turning but not all that bad.
When I first bought a PC or Palm when they first became available it felt like the technology arrived at the right time. This reader feels like it is from the future. Holding it and using it transports you to the future. You do come back to earth as issues pop up but I think I will always be amazed at this gadget.
Amazon - Wake up and let non Kindle users purchase electronic books! You own MobiPocket so there really is no excuse.

| I have owned my Iliad 2nd edition for about seven months now. When it first arrived, I changed the installed batteries with larger. I now get about 15 hours of reading time before I must recharge. I have read at least 25 books on my Iliad - most of them free from Gutenberg Press. I also own a Kindle 1, which I found to be a bit too small (screen-wise), although I was happy with the Kindle for quite some time. Now I have given the Kindle to my wife, who has also become an e-book reader. The Iliad is just the right size screen for me. However, it is a bit too big to take with me into the wilderness backpacking and camping. The new Sony 5" screen seems just right for that. Maybe this Christmas? One final point: If you do get an Iliad, be satisfied with the plastic cover that comes with it. I believe that it is made by M-Edge. I bought an M-Edge leather cover for my Iliad... it lasted about 4 weeks before the leather wore through to the plastic underlayer. |
lots of potential, short on realization

This device has a lot of capabilities, but you have to write your own software to be able to take advantage of them. After reading reviews of the Kindle and the Sony reader, I bought an iliad, because I want to carry around and read professional documents, such as patents, in PDF format, without too much hassle. As it has been remarked in an earlier review, the manual and online/e-mail help is next to useless.
I do not plan to write my own software, but I made a gamble that sooner or later authorized software will become available.
For example, the iliad has the capability to allow you to buy or access content via WIFI, but this capability is not currently realized, except for direct download of upgrades from the company, irex.
For recreational use, I plan to buy the Kindle when more Amazon books become available in the Kindle format.

Great Hardware No Software

A friend of mine bought the Sony reader and I loved the screen but I like to read a lot of technical books and after reading all the reviews on the iLiad it really seemed like the best. I've had mine for just over day now and here are my initial thoughts.
The Bad
1) It only reads some CF cards, the one I bought doesn't work. So I've got to go get a different brand.
2) There is no support for this product, you can't get any help from the website and the documentation is terrible.
3) It doesn't really work with vista.
4) The most help you will get is on the open source site for it and that is where any software can be found for it (though I have yet to be able to install anything, as I keep running into problem after problem and there is no real support for it so I am going to have to grind though).
5) You have to look around to find out how to do anything other than read books on it and then you just find bits and pieces all over the place.
The Good
1) The device itself is great, good interface the screen is as good as any other e-reader, but bigger. I put a pdf on it and it was very readable.
2) The ability to write notes is great and works really well.
3) Once you get a book onto it is a joy to read off of.
Overall
I wouldn't buy this unless you don't mind spending hours and hours fiddling with it, with very little help. Personally, if I had known it was going to be this much trouble I would have stuck to printing out and binding all the pdf's I read and buying the easy to use Sony that my friend bought for enjoyment reading. It's not nearly as useful as advertised! I think for most people it will only be used as a book reader like the Sony, it just cost a lot more. To do all the other stuff they say you can do with this, will take you a long long time to get working. I think it'll be my hobby for the next month If I don't just give up try not to make it do all the stuff they say it can do and just read books off of it.
